Out of 22m only 600,000 residents pay taxes in lagos -Ambode
While speaking at the recent sensitization workshop on 2017 Water Technology and Environmental Control Exhibition and Conference (WATEC), Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, said out of a massive population of 22million, only 600,000 Lagos residents are up to date in paying their taxes, and that such was not helpful to scale up provision of infrastructure and other amenities for the people.
According to the governor, the government has identified the need for residents to adopt a willful approach to the payment of taxes as a means of addressing fundamental challenges confronting the State and accelerating development in all sectors and sections.
Responding to a suggestion from one of the participants at the workshop that the State Government should complete the ongoing shoreline protection particularly in the Lekki and Ajah axis as one of the ways to mitigate the impact of torrential rainfalls which caused flooding in the axis last week, Governor Ambode said in as much as government was willing to do such, it was being inhibited by its limited resources.
He said: ?Talking about protecting our shoreline, I want to tell you something. The ecological fund that someone talked about does not exist because the previous government, due to political consideration, never gave Lagos anything and protecting the shoreline runs into billions.
?Even doing those groins not to allow the water to break cost a lot of money and then with frozen taxes in the last eight to ten years, there has not been any increase in taxes unlike in the United Kingdom for instance where any young person living there knows that once you start working at the age of 18, your civic obligation is that you must pay tax but here nobody takes it as their business that the new road I am using I need to pay something and so they only pay tax when they are inside the real tax net that is you are paying pay as you earn.
?That is the only way we can catch you and so everybody takes it for granted that government will do it and there is nothing like government money, it is taxes that people are paying that you are asking for this shoreline protection, it is from the taxes that you are asking for us to de-flood, it is from the taxes that you are asking for us to do the roads and all that.
?The number of people paying taxes in Lagos is less than 600,000 people and we are 22million and then 67 percent of the people living in Lagos are below the age of 35 and even the retirees, how much are they paying? They are on pension. So, you have to go through your nose and you want to be as compassionate as possible that in a recession, you don?t overtax people.?
According to him, it was time for a convergence between civic obligations and the ability of government to build trust by using taxes of citizens judiciously, just assured that his administration, within the available resources, would continue to invest in infrastructure and deliver good governance to make life comfortable and easier for the people.
?What I am saying is that there must be a convergence between civic obligations and the ability of government to build trust and be able to tell people that you know what, the little that you are giving me, I will use it judiciously. When I use it judiciously and you see it overtime, trust me, if you pay more, I will do more.
?Obviously, the vision is there, the plan is there but again it is not driven by anything than the citizens themselves and the area that we need improvement is for citizens to have trust or confidence that the taxes they are paying will be returned back in terms of infrastructure but I can tell you that I am also concerned; I see a lot of things I don?t like but I am inhibited by the amount of money I have,? Governor Ambode said.

Kim Kardashian and kanye west expecting third child
Power couple, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are set to expand their family again..
However Kim will not be the biological mother..
Following doctor’s advice that the reality star faces health risks if she dared get pregnant again, the couple have opted for a surrogate who is already three months pregnant, US Magazine reports..
The surrogate mum has been revealed to be a San Diego woman who is in her late 20s, and the baby will be here by January 2018.
Sources close to the reality star and her rapper husband, reveal that they chose the perfect person – in that the woman had served as a surrogate before and she will reportedly be paid “$45,000 in 10 monthly installments of $4,500”, and in case the pregnancy results in multiples, the couple will “fork over $5,000 per additional child.”
The couple already made a $68,850 given to the agency that linked the surrogate.
Recall, Kim Kardashian suffered two dangerous health conditions during her last two pregnancies — Preeclampsia (which symptoms such as massively swollen feet, face and weight gain), and also placenta acreeta – a condition where the placenta refuses to come out after delivery.
During her pregnancy with her second child Saint, her doctors feared she would face similar condition. She was under intensive supervision, and later had her son 3 weeks early.

Stand by the truth Osibanjo urges Nigerians
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has urged Nigerians to always stand by the truth at all times.
Osinbajo gave the charge in a sermon he delivered on Sunday to the congregation at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Jesus House, Silverbird Entertainment Centre, Central Area, Abuja.
He said standing by the truth always entail a level of discomfort or even outright persecution, but that God will always show up to justify the righteous.
“When God showed up in the fire through His Son, it was the first direct appearance of God in the Old Testament. If they had chosen to bow to the golden image and thereafter seek to make amends through prayer and fasting, it would not have helped them.
“It is when you are passing through fire that you make a choice for God to honour Him. God said He will show up then,’’ the acting president said.
Osinbajo said that in every circumstance of life, people, especially Christians, must stand up to what is right and just.
“God is asking us to stand and stand up for something, be it against corruption, dishonesty, stealing or fraud in our offices etc. If we do not, we are bowing to that image of gold. We should stand for what we believe in as the three Jews did.
“Every time we look at the scripture, God is saying: `Stand for something. You cannot afford to stand for nothing. Stand for Christ. The choice that faced the three Jews is still before us today. We face it everyday and we must stand for Christ, especially Christians.”

Boko Haram mosque destroyed in Kogi state
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Wednesday stormed some property in Okene Local Government Area of the state belonging to suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.
Bello, who was accompanied by the State Police Commissioner, Wilson Inalegwu and heads of other security agencies, brought down a mosque used by suspected kidnappers, Boko Haram terrorists and armed robbers in Okene, in the Central Senatorial District of the state.
The two buildings destroyed by the officers belonged to a suspected kidnap kingpin, popularly known as Alhaji Tijani Bakare in Oyunkoko Ward in Okene, while the second building levelled to the ground was the Ahlul-Sunnah Mosque in Inike, Okene LGA, which was reportedly hijacked in 2015 by members of the Boko Haram sect.
Speaking shortly after the exercise, the Governor said he had no sympathy for anyone engaging in dubious acts, as he would implement to the letter the law against anti-kidnapping, robbery and terrorism.
He said, “For those who are in the habit of harbouring criminals in their houses, we will fish them out and mete out serious punishment to them as if they are criminals themselves.”
The governor warned that more property of criminals would be demolished.
