Edo house of assembly speaker narrowly escapes assassination

The Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Mr Justin Okonoboh came close to being killed by a gang of armed men while returning from Igueben Local Government Area of the State on Friday.

This was disclosed by Okonoboh (APC, Igueben constituency) in a media briefing in the state capital, Benin on Saturday.

Still reeling from the near-death experience, Okonoboh commended the bravery of his backup driver for putting his life on the line to get him out of harm’s way..

He said;

“On my way back from my constituency at about 5pm on Friday, where I went to settle some land issues, ‎my Aide in the Escort van called me from his phone that we should be on alert that a Toyata camry was chasing us,” he said.

“When we look back the car was behind my back up Hilux van. The camry wanted to overtake the Hilux to block me but the driver did not allow them. The Toyota camry struggled with Hilux for about five kilometers and they almost crashed but did not give up.

“The policemen inside the Hilux van fired a shot into the air to scare them but that did not deter them as they kept chasing us.

“It happened around Ugbegun-Nebudin -Ujogba road, it was when we got to the Benin-Auchi express way they waved their hands to give us a warning.”

Decrying the state of insecurity despite the abundance of security personnel, he stated that the matter had been reported to the State Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu.
