We won't loose corps members again NYSC boss vows

Director-General of NYSC, Brig Gen. Sule Zakari Kazaure, has vowed to protect lives and properties of corps members during their national service and during elections. Kazaure who made this assertion in-view of  governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states later  this year said, never again will corps members die in the course of serving their fathers land.

Speaking during his visit to the ongoing 2016 Batch-A Orientation exercise in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, where he was quizzed in view of the imminent governorship elections in Edo and Ondo state later this year, Kazaure said: ‘’The NYSC will work hand in glove with relevant stakeholders in the states to ensure absolute safety of corps members who will participate in the processes to prevent the recurrence of the devastating case of late Corps member, Mr.Dumebi Okonta who was shot dead by hoodlums during Rivers rerun parliamentary elections.’’

Welfare and security of  corps members

He reiterated: ‘’The welfare and security of my corps members are my utmost priorities, I have already mentioned it in all the camps so we are going to make adequate arrangements with all our stakeholders to make sure that they are properly secured.”

Meanwhile, the D.G who addressed himself as the ‘National Dad’of the corps members, explained that the NYSC scheme is about national integration for service to the nation. He urged them to take advantage of the bumper opportunities of the orientation camp which is meant to fortify them for the likely challenges during and after the scheme and more so, take the privilege of the skill acquisition course in efforts to be empowered.

He added that corps members should respect the culture and ways of their host communities and help add value to them through  community development project and desist from vices. Be upright ambassadors of your families, give diligent service  throughout your service year, while bearing in mind that there are rewards for active service.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Cyril Akhanemhe, while extending a warm welcome to the D.G boasted about the unparalleled and exemplary place of the Lagos State orientation camp. According to him, adequate security and necessary facilities have been made available for corps members on camp.

He said:  “We have everything here, from mobile banking, to recreational facilities, clinic with prompt services.  ”You would be surprised that we don’t have anyone sick laying on our beds because, we are very proactive in making sure that corps members who have health problems are treated expeditiously.

Akhanemhe, who lamented  that  many corps members have lost their lives due to indiscriminate travelling of corps members said, though the camp is fortified with maximum security for safety of corps members, NYSC officials do keep tabs to ensure they don’t go outside the camp indiscriminately.

He said, “There is no way you can put a tracking device on corps members  not to travel but then, we had lose more corps members to accident than illness.
